Carlos Martínez Trujillo
(Mérida Yucatán México 1981)
Carlos is a visual Communicator, the founder and principal of Bienal Comunicación, an internationally multi awared creative agency specialized in the creation of concepts and brands.
Carlos Martinez Trujillo combines his formal education with his experimental and self-taught streak. His visual eclecticism is highly instinctual and individualistic and his art vision has been a deep component of his work both inside and outside of his studio. From his young age he began travelling around the world. This travel, along with his life in this origin city, Mérida, has informed and left a mark in his works, for Carlos Martínez Trujillo, travel has a profound effect in the spiritual life, the symbolism and the semiotics.
His passion for exploring turned him into an artifact and object collector, finding pieces characterized by the presence of design, history, craftsmanship and "soul", symbolic elements made personal mementos by modifications and interventions without being this necessarily the defining characteristic of his artistic vision. His work shows a study of calligraphic personal traces non recognizable, an aesthetic language filled with "deep messages" that go beyond the normal sense and intention of traditional reading. <br
His work has been presented in collective expos of photography, object-art and fine arts, but most of his work has envolved in private and intensely personal manner, working consciously and creatively inside his studio.
With his work at Bienal Comunicación, Carlos has pursued an aesthetic sense and deep conceptualization that has evolved in parallel with his artistic production and has explored diverse media, formats and techniques like the short film "Emotion" (Emoción, 2016) which he wrote and directed.
This combination of a personal language, a deep semiotic analysis, a diversity of techniques and media like photography, caligraphy, painting and intervention in the basis of this first solo exhibition, happening far away from his magical origin land to happen in another magical place, filled with mysticism and new stories waiting to be revealed.
SIJIL
by Carlos Martínez Trujillo
Named by the Mayan word, SIJIL, that means birth, this exhibition is the result of an explorative process, a genesis brought by the juxtaposition of spiritual ideas and symbols, of nostalgic memories and cryptic aesthetics, all synthetized in the artist’s magical calligraphy.
SIJIL origins from the significant incomprehension, from questioning the hidden meaning of every calligraphic trace, by directing the viewer’s attention in the materiality of the line, and in the decoding process of it, creating a split between the meaning and the symbol. These pieces are guess games, cryptic codices that swim between the universal language and the individual perception, visual riddles waiting for the viewer’s gaze.
SIJIL’s inspiration comes from different sources, whose common factor is the transcendental story, those tales that mark and illuminate whole cultures, meaningful riddles that spark little insights, awakenings and illuminations. A tale is the shortest way to the truth, fiction helps us to find shortcuts to the great revelations, and that is why this series of pictures is inspired by the artist’s obsession and collection of life and spiritual changing Sufi tales, parables, fables, Koans, metaphors an analogies, this personal and magical roadmap towards the ethical, spiritual and life changing knowledge. SIJIL is the visual, physical and aesthetic interpretation of these suggestive fictions, of these intermingling roads that lead us to the truth.
Travelling from Merida, Carlos Martínez Trujillo presents us this collection of pictures filled with intention and riddles, encrypted messages that invite the gaze and the mind to spark a profound and vital revelation.
